Kayak vs. Paddleboard
Kayaking
- Seated position - more comfortable for long paddles
- More stable - great for beginners and kids
- Better for carrying gear (fishing, coolers)
- Tandem kayaks available for pairs
- Can paddle in windier conditions
Best for: Longer tours, families, wildlife watching, fishing
Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
- Standing gives better views
- Core workout while paddling
- Can sit or kneel when tired
- Easier to transport (inflatable options)
- Trendy and fun
Best for: Calm days, fitness focus, shorter sessions, yoga classes
Paddling Tips
Check the Wind
Wind over 10-15 mph makes paddling challenging. Morning is usually calmest. Check forecasts before booking.
Wear a PFD
Life jackets are required in NJ waterways. Rental shops provide them. Non-swimmers should always wear one.
Sun Protection
You'll be on the water for hours with no shade. Reef-safe sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are essential.
Bring Water
Paddling is exercise. Bring a water bottle - most kayaks have storage. Stay hydrated!
