Most NJ beaches ban dogs during summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day). However, Sandy Hook and Island Beach State Park allow dogs year-round in non-swimming areas. Brigantine permits dogs before 10am and after 6pm even in summer. During the off-season (September through May), most beaches allow leashed dogs. Always check specific town rules before visiting.

Essential dog beach gear includes: a dog life jacket for swimming safety, portable water bottle and collapsible bowl, cooling vest or mat for hot days, paw protection wax or booties for hot sand, quick-dry towel, leash (6 ft max at most beaches), waste bags, and shade like a pop-up tent. Bring fresh water since dogs should not drink salt water.

Use a properly-fitted dog life jacket with a handle for easy lifting, especially for dogs not experienced in ocean waves. Never force dogs into water, and watch for signs of fatigue.
