NJ Shore Camping Tips
Reserve Early
State park campsites book up months in advance for summer. Use Reserve America and set alerts for cancellations. Weekdays are easier to book.
Prepare for Wind & Sand
Coastal camping means wind. Bring extra stakes, use sand anchors, and secure loose items. A tent with good ventilation handles summer heat better.
Bug Protection
Mosquitoes and greenhead flies are notorious near NJ marshes. Bring DEET or Picaridin repellent, a screened tent, and consider a bug head net.
Pack a Camp Stove
Fire restrictions are common, especially during dry periods. A reliable camp stove ensures you can cook regardless of fire bans.

NJ Shore Camping FAQs
Can you camp near the Jersey Shore?▼
Yes! Several state parks and campgrounds offer camping near NJ beaches. Island Beach State Park, Bass River State Forest, Allaire State Park, and Belleplain State Forest all have campsites. Cape May also has private campgrounds. Most require reservations, especially during summer.
When should I reserve campsites for NJ shore camping?▼
For summer weekends (Memorial Day to Labor Day), reserve 2-3 months in advance through Reserve America. State park campsites fill quickly, especially at Island Beach State Park. Weekday camping and shoulder seasons (May, September) are easier to book on shorter notice.
Can you camp directly on the beach in New Jersey?▼
Beach camping is not permitted on NJ ocean beaches. However, Island Beach State Park offers campsites very close to the beach with easy access. For true beachfront camping, you'd need to look at private campgrounds or head to Sandy Hook (part of Gateway National Recreation Area) which occasionally has special permits.
What camping gear do I need for the Jersey Shore?▼
Essential gear includes: a quality tent with good ventilation (summer heat) and wind resistance (coastal winds), sleeping bags rated 40-50°F for summer, a ground tarp, camp stove (fires restricted in many areas), cooler with ice, insect repellent, and sunscreen. Sand stakes are helpful for securing tents in sandy soil.
Are campfires allowed at NJ state park campgrounds?▼
Fire regulations vary by park and season. Most state parks allow fires in designated fire rings only, and some implement fire bans during dry periods. Island Beach State Park has stricter fire rules due to dune grass fire risk. Always check current fire regulations before your trip and bring a camp stove as backup.
