Why Avalon for July 4th?
Avalon trades boardwalk noise for tall dunes, wide beaches, and a slower pace - which is exactly why families have come back for generations. The town's nickname, "cooler by a mile," comes from how far it juts into the Atlantic, and on July 4 the ocean breeze makes for a comfortable night under the fireworks, which go off around 9 PM.
The day runs on a simple rhythm: beach in the morning, a walk to the 30th Street business district for lunch and ice cream, then back to the sand for the show. Avalon is also one of the most rental-driven towns on the shore, so most visitors settle into a beach house for the week rather than a hotel.
Stone Harbor sits at the south end of the same island and runs its fireworks on July 3, so a long weekend here can easily include both shows without much driving.
