Why Atlantic Highlands for July 4th?
Atlantic Highlands sits on the Raritan and Sandy Hook bays at the foot of the Highlands, home to Mount Mitchill, the highest natural point on the Eastern Seaboard. The result is a Fourth of July with sweeping water-and-skyline views you simply cannot get from the open-ocean beach towns.
The Atlantic Highlands Fire Department traditionally launches its fireworks on Thursday, July 2, 2026 around dusk (roughly 9 PM, with festivities earlier in the evening) over the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor, the largest municipal harbor on the East Coast. Boats, the marina, and the bayfront make a dramatic backdrop for the show.
As the gateway to Sandy Hook and a stop on the Seastreak ferry to Manhattan, Atlantic Highlands pairs small-town charm with easy access. Spend the day at the beach or on the bay, then settle in along the harbor for fireworks reflected on the water.
How to Spend the Fourth
Morning at the Bay
Start with a paddle, a charter, or a walk along the Municipal Harbor, then take in the panoramic bay-and-NYC views from the overlook at Mount Mitchill.
Afternoon at Sandy Hook
Atlantic Highlands is the gateway to Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook, with ocean beaches, bike paths, and historic Fort Hancock just minutes away.
Harborside Dinner
Grab a waterfront table at On The Deck overlooking the marina, or dig into barbecue at Memphis Pig Out before the evening lights up.
Fireworks Over the Harbor
Find a spot along the harbor or waterfront park as dusk falls. The Fire Department show, traditionally Thursday, July 2 around 9 PM, bursts over the boats and bay.
