About Sea Girt Lighthouse
The Sea Girt Lighthouse is the last live-in lighthouse built on the Atlantic Coast. Its unique residential design included quarters for the keeper's family, making it a charming piece of Victorian domestic architecture.
History
Sea Girt Lighthouse was built in 1896 and was the last live-in lighthouse constructed on the Atlantic Coast. Unlike most lighthouses where keepers lived in separate quarters, Sea Girt was designed as an integrated home with the light tower rising from the roof.
The lighthouse was the first in the nation to have a radio fog signal, installed in 1921. This radio beacon helped guide ships in foggy conditions and represented a major advancement in maritime safety.
Deactivated in 1945, the lighthouse served as the Sea Girt borough library for many years. In 1981, citizen volunteers began restoring it as a museum and community gathering place.
