History

Romer Shoal Lighthouse was built in 1898 to mark the dangerous Romer Shoal at the entrance to Lower New York Bay. The shoal had claimed numerous ships before the lighthouse was constructed.

The sparkplug-style design sits on a concrete caisson and was built to withstand the harsh conditions of the open bay. The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation.
